Why Skin Prep Matters for Mature Skin (and How to Get It Right)

By Kirsty, Makeup by Kirsty

If there's one thing I say to almost every client over 50, it's this: great makeup starts before you open a single product. I've lost count of the times someone has told me, "my foundation just doesn't sit right anymore." Nine times out of ten, the foundation isn't the problem. The canvas underneath it is.

Mature skin is beautiful, but it behaves differently. It tends to be drier, a little thinner, and more textured than it was in your thirties. Makeup applied straight onto skin that isn't prepared can settle into fine lines, cling to dry patches, or look flat and heavy by lunchtime. A few minutes of proper prep changes all of that.

What changes with mature skin

As we age, our skin naturally produces less oil and holds onto moisture less easily. Skin cell turnover slows down, so dullness and uneven texture can build up on the surface. Add years of Gold Coast sunshine, and it's no surprise that makeup can behave very differently than it used to.

The good news? You don't need a complicated routine. You need the right steps, done gently.

Step 1: Start with a gentle cleanse

Make sure your skin is clean, but not stripped. Harsh, foaming cleansers can leave mature skin feeling tight, and tight skin is the enemy of smooth makeup. Choose a creamy or milky cleanser and use lukewarm water. Pat dry rather than rubbing.

Step 2: Hydrate, then hydrate again

Hydration is the foundation of good foundation. A hydrating serum (look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin) pressed into damp skin helps plump the surface and softens the look of fine lines. Follow with a moisturiser suited to your skin type, and give it a few minutes to absorb before moving on. Rushing this step is one of the most common reasons makeup looks patchy.

Step 3: Don't forget the eyes and lips

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the face, and it's where makeup is most likely to crease. A light, dedicated eye cream or gel makes a noticeable difference to how concealer wears. A little lip balm early on means your lips will be soft and ready for colour when you get to them.

Step 4: Sunscreen, every day

Here in Queensland, this isn't optional. Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for your skin, and it also creates a smooth layer between your skincare and your makeup. Let it settle fully before you continue.

Step 5: Prime with purpose

Primer isn't essential for everyone, but on mature skin the right one can be wonderful. A hydrating or smoothing primer, applied lightly where you need it most (often around the nose, cheeks and forehead), helps foundation glide on and stay put. Skip heavy, mattifying primers unless your skin is genuinely oily, as they can emphasise dryness and texture.

A few of my favourite tips

  • Less is more. Thin layers of product look more natural than one heavy layer.
  • Wait between steps. Give each product a minute or two to sink in.
  • Exfoliate gently, and not too often. A mild exfoliant once or twice a week can help smooth texture, but over-doing it will leave skin irritated.
  • Use your fingertips. Warm hands help products melt into the skin.
  • Prep the neck and chest too. Makeup should look seamless from face to décolletage.

The difference you'll see

When skin is properly prepped, foundation looks like skin rather than makeup. Concealer stays put, blush melts in, and the whole look feels comfortable and fresh instead of heavy. It's the secret behind a flawless finish, and it takes only a few extra minutes.

Every skin is different, so what works beautifully for one person may need tweaking for another. If you'd like personalised guidance on prepping your skin and creating a look that makes you feel like yourself, I'd love to help.
